1926 Miami Springs Ice Plant

Miami Springs Ice Plant. Late 1926 photo of the newly completed Hialeah Ice Company. Building in Country Club Estates. (Miami Springs). The ice plant was located on what is now Swallow Drive just North of the Lions Club in Miami Springs. Construction of the original building was completed in February 1926. It was completely destroyed in the great Miami hurricane of September 18, 1926. The new facility was constructed at a cost of $120,000 and was able to resume operation by November 15th. Their 33 employees were producing 30 tons of ice a day and distributing it throughout the area with their fleet of nine trucks. Ten tons of ice per day was expected to be delivered to Hialeah Greyhound track and Miami Jockey Club (Hialeah Race Track). In 1930 the Hialeah Ice Company along with thirteen other South Florida ice companies were purchased by City Fuel & Ice Company.
