Miami Springs High baseball team to receive championship rings November 20th

It’s finally here!

After winning the Florida High School Athletic Association 3A State Championship in May, the Miami Springs High boys’ baseball team will receive their championship rings.

The ring ceremony will take place on Thursday, November 20 at 6 p.m. at the Miami Springs Adult Community Center, 101 Apache Street. The event is being sponsored by Miami-Dade County School Board member Danny Espino and the city of Miami Springs.

Now, the players can wear their rings at school and in the community, reflecting the hard work and dedication to achieve high school baseball’s biggest accomplishment. The community is expected to come out to celebrate the Golden Hawks’ championship season, the first title for the school in any sport since 1988.

The city of Miami Springs threw a parade for the team in June, as the players showcased the hardware they brought from Ft. Myers, where the top high school baseball teams in Florida competed for the championship.  The underdog Miami Springs upset Fort Myers Bishop Verot, 12-2, to advance to the championship games against No. 1 ranked Santa Rosa Beach South Walton High School.

The Golden Hawks pulled off another upset victory by defeating Walton, 2-1, to secure the state championship.”What these boys did out there today and what they’ve done over the last month is truly amazing,” said Miami Springs head baseball coach David Fanshawe. “To somehow navigate our way through these talented teams, especially Bishop Verot and South Walton is truly remarkable.” The Golden Hawks, who posted a 32-2 record this past season, were led by starting pitcher Magdiel Estevez, who cooled off Walton’s hot bats. In the semi finals, Walton scored 17 runs against Brooksville Hernando. Estevez struckout six Walton batters and retired a total of 12 players.”I don’t really like to pray for hits, strikeouts or wins,” Estevez said after the game. “My prayer to the Lord was mainly, ‘put your hands over me and I need you to guide me at this moment.’ I knew that, win or lose, no matter the outcome, people would love me regardless.”
