Emergency In Paradise. Accidental Shooting

Miami Springs residents awoke Monday morning to news of a shooting that occurred late Sunday night in the quiet residential neighborhood along the 500 block of Esplanade Drive near the Miami Springs Golf Course.

According to the Miami Springs Police Department and Miami Springs.com. Michael Martinez, 41, a Miami Springs resident, was arrested after authorities say he accidentally shot his wife inside their home. Police report the incident occurred just before 9 p.m. while Martinez was handling a firearm in the kitchen of the residence.

Investigators say Martinez had obtained the firearm earlier in the day and was manipulating a revolver near the kitchen island while his wife was doing dishes. When she turned toward him, the weapon discharged and she was struck in the chest, according to the arrest report.

Emergency responders from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue quickly arrived at the scene and airlifted the victim to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where she was listed in stable condition Monday.

Authorities say Martinez immediately called 911 after the shooting and remained on scene. During interviews with investigators from her hospital bed, the victim reportedly stated that the couple has a healthy relationship and that she believes the incident was accidental.

Martinez was later arrested and charged with culpable negligence resulting in serious bodily harm and improper exhibition of a firearm. He appeared in Miami-Dade bond court Monday, where a judge set bond at $3,000 and ordered that he not possess any firearms, weapons, or ammunition.

The incident drew a significant emergency response Sunday night in the typically quiet neighborhood that borders the golf course and canal system that many Miami Springs residents frequent for evening walks and bike rides.

Brad Curtis, a lifelong Miami Springs resident who was born and raised in the community, was on scene as emergency personnel prepared the victim for transport.

“I saw Miami Springs Police department officials on the scene as the police line do not cross tape was strapped up across the driveway.” Curtis said. “It was a sobering moment for a neighborhood that rarely sees this kind of incident. But the River Cities Gazette was there for you”

As of Monday afternoon, authorities confirmed the victim remained hospitalized but stable.

While the case appears to involve an accidental discharge rather than a domestic violence incident, police officials say the situation serves as a reminder of the importance of firearm safety and responsible handling.

The investigation remains ongoing. The hard working law enforcement individuals who handled this efficiently and properly are appreciated here from River Cities Gazette. There is a reason why we live in such a safe place.
