Friday, July 17th, 2026 – With 2026 more than halfway done, Velvet Plush served up a full batch of memories for everyone who came out to the show Friday night. Rain had fallen for most of the day—weather that typically keeps crowds at home—but this evening proved to be the exception. Once the rain finally cleared, Woody’s Backyard Grill (600 Payne Dr.) felt like it exhaled: the air was cooler, the conversations got louder, and the Backyard filled quickly with people eager to trade gray skies for guitars and good company. The bar stayed busy, chairs scraped back as late arrivals squeezed in, and the familiar pre-show hum turned into a steady buzz that made it clear this wouldn’t be a quiet night. By the time the lights and amps came on, Woody’s was packed to capacity, and friends, family and neighbors were already leaning in—laughing, pointing toward the stage, and settling into that shared excitement that only live music can bring. From the first chords, the energy climbed with every song. Led by Albert Justo, Velvet Plush delivered their signature 90s rock sound, tapping into the era’s big hooks and high-octane riffs. The crowd didn’t just cheer and clap—they whooped at standout solos, chanted between songs, and sang along the moment those familiar choruses hit. Heads nodded to the beat across the patio, a few people slipped out of their seats to dance, and more than one table turned into a mini sing-along as strangers smiled at each other like they’d known the words forever.
By the end of the set, the night felt less like a typical Friday outing and more like a full-on throwback: the kind of show that pulls you out of the week, reminds you why those songs still hit, and sends you home replaying favorite moments while already asking when the band will be back. Velvet Plush has only been together for less than a year. They try to rehears as much as possible. Albert said “When we play at Woody’s we try different things, we just want to put on the best show possible.” And that they did. The crowd was filled with goosebumps and felt the need to get out of their seats and dance.
Albert is a familiar face at Woody’s, especially on Wednesday nights for open mic, where local musicians and regulars come together to share songs and support one another. Woody’s is a staple for live music in our community—not just for the bands onstage, but for the way it brings the River Cities together week after week. It’s the kind of place where newcomers feel welcome, regulars are treated like family, and the West side of Miami Springs always seems to have something going on when the lights come up and the amps turn on.
Just like Woody’s creates nights worth talking about, River Cities Gazette is here to help share those stories across the community and create information and entertainment worth talking about. River Cities Gazette is always there for you—and we can be there for your business, too. Send your business skyrocketing into success by letting us create a buzz for you in the River Cities.
