Poetry Corner: Mr. Lawnmower Man.. Why Are Your Machines So Loud? By Brad Curtis

The grass gets cut till the yards are done.

Surely this cannot be fun.

You start early and finish late. You even wack against the gate.

Without a grin, you make sure every blade gets trim.

The sound is strong. Cats and dogs hide.

Birds can’t chirp as your mower glides.

Row by row, like solving a puzzle.

Your face is covered by a muzzle.

Your machines are what produces the clatter.

You must yell if you choose to chatter.

A necessary chore, like a hair cut.

You press on despite being stuck in a rut.

Squirrels stare, what is that sound?

As they munch on a nut till it hits the ground.

Busy, busy, lots of yards around.

Your bark is louder than my hound.

Appointments are set. Our needs are met.

You rumble on, even when the grass is wet.

Our noses smell the powerful scent.

As we yawn and stretch, air conditioning blows through the vent.

Even though this is not fun.

You roll on till the job gets done.

In long sleeves underneath the beaming Sun.

As I step into the role of the publisher of River Cities Gazette. I reflect on how my father Tom started the newspaper when I was two years old. I have been surrounded by the Gazette my entire life. Born and raised in Miami Springs. My father was my little league coach, we were the Padres. I went to Springview Elementary as a young one. I graduated from Miami Springs Senior High School as a part of the school newspaper. The Zeitgeist was the name of the paper. It refers to the moral and cultural climate of the specific era. I was a writer and the photographer of The Zeitgeist. I graduated with honors in 1996. I attended University of South Florida in Tampa and received my associates of arts degree. For the last twenty five years, I have been the assistant publisher of the River Cities Gazette. It was the plan from the start for me to take over the helm. As the Gazette is a family business. I am ecstatic to announce. That day has come. My passion, my dedication, my focus and my drive has been the River Cities Gazette for the majority of my adult life. As I continue the legacy of greatness passed down to me by my father Tom Curtis. And take over the reins as a true leader. Ready to tackle any issue that comes my way. Thanks to God, I have the strength to do so.
