Local political leaders are stepping up their efforts to tackle food insecurity in Miami Springs.
The city of Miami Springs and state Senator Bryan Avila are teaming up with Farm Share for a free food drive-thru distribution event, set for Tuesday, November 25th, 2025 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at the Miami Springs Community Center, 1401 Westward Drive.
Food distribution is on a first come, first serve basis while supplies last. Walk-ups are not permitted.
Food insecurity is impacting many communities as inflation and unemployment are on the rise and SOME people are struggling to make ends meet. In addition, federal workers were forced to work without pay amid the government shutdown which ended on November 12 and lasted a record 43 days. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits were delayed during the shutdown, leaving roughly 42 million recipients nationwide struggling to find food assistance including food banks and food pantries.
Florida has among the highest SNAP recipients in the nation with about 2.98 million people who depend on the program to address world hunger, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The agency said SNAP benefits will be restored in mid November and recipients sought food banks and food pantries until then. However, the non-profits are struggling themselves as they are facing deep cuts in federal and state funding this year.
The USDA has cut over $1 billion in funding for programs that support food banks and food pantries, impacting their ability to distribute food, and the cancellation of $500 million in deliveries from a program which provides U.S. produced meat, dairy, eggs and produce has further strained services.
Local leaders are coming to the aid with food drives and giving out free turkeys for Thanksgiving.
