Saturday, August 8th at Woody’s had that smooth, calm energy that only shows up after a good rain. The clouds had finally moved on, and the air felt lighter—no longer thick and sweaty—like the whole evening had been rinsed clean. Out back at Woody’s Backyard Grill (600 Payne Dr.), an acoustic trio made up of three members of The Renegades settled in and let the night breathe.
Scott and Mike—both from Long Island—played with the easy understanding that comes from years of making music side by side. Nothing felt rushed or forced. Their timing was instinctive, their interplay relaxed, as if they were speaking a language they’ve known forever.
Martha brought the extra spark, adding a singing voice to the mix, her dark tan catching the last of the day’s warmth. The whole set stayed laid-back, but it carried a bright thread of energy—enough to make you want to swing your legs back and forth, up and down, the way you did as a kid on a swingset.
Even though they could probably do it in their sleep, the band still rehearses twice a month, and you could hear the care in every turn. Each note landed cleanly, and each song seemed to tug at something familiar—nostalgia that didn’t weigh the night down, but lifted it, keeping the mood light, steady, and quite lively at the same time.
